A Thoughtful and Complete Farewell
At EarthPet, we believe that every horse’s final journey should be handled with care and reverence. In response to the growing need for a specialised and holistic end-of-life service for horses, we developed a comprehensive farewell offering designed to support owners through one of the hardest decisions they will face.
In 2024, we introduced a purpose-built veterinary vehicle specifically designed for equine euthanasia and transport. This vehicle allows us to manage every stage of the farewell process with professionalism and gentleness – from home euthanasia to respectful transportation and environmentally conscious Bio-Burial. To our knowledge, we are the only provider in the Western Cape currently offering all of these services as part of one integrated approach.
What We Offer
Home Euthanasia
We provide peaceful, at-home euthanasia services, performed by a compassionate veterinarian and vet assistant. This ensures minimal stress for both horse and owner. Our specialised vehicle is equipped with everything necessary – from medicine and straps to lighting and water – to carry out the procedure with dignity and care.
We understand that you might want your own veterinarian that understands and knows you and your horse to perform the euthanasia. Our vehicle is also available to your veterinarian for renting and we can fully stock it with their requirements when making arrangements. The vehicle is rented with our trained supportive staff to assist your vet with the euthanasia and transporting the horse afterwards.
Immediate and Respectful Transport
Following euthanasia, your horse is transported in our custom-built vehicle. Designed with a powerful remote-controlled winch and rollers, the process is efficient and respectful. The horse is secured in a way that avoids strain on the neck, and the loading process takes just minutes – allowing for immediate transport and avoiding the need for further containment on your premises.
Eco-Friendly Bio-Burial
At our facility, we offer a gentle and environmentally conscious farewell through a process known as Bio-Burial. This method uses advanced composting technology to return your horse’s body to the earth naturally. For those who wish, we offer a Return of Compost service – delivering the resulting humus back to you. Many owners choose to use this living soil to plant a tree or garden in memory of their horse, creating a lasting tribute to their life and spirit.
Euthanasia at Our Facility
For those who prefer to bring their horse to us, we can also perform euthanasia at our premises. Please note that we are unable to transport live horses.
Pet Farewell Plan for Horses
We offer a Pet Farewell Plan specifically for horses which allows you to prepay for the Bio-Burial or Return of Compost service in 3 to 6 manageable installments. It can also include the transport fee from a specific location. This means that your horse will be “covered” in advance and when the time comes, the burial/ transport portion of the service is already paid, leaving only the euthanasia fee to be settled, if needed. Our Pet Farwell Plans are designed to ease the financial burden on the pet owner during a difficult time.
